NICE 1840 HALF EAGLE FROM THE SS NEW YORK SHIPWRECK RECOVERY. SS NEW YORK: The SSNY was a sidewheel steamship launched in New York City in 1837. During the 1840's the ship along with her sister ship, the SS Columbia shuttled back and forth between Galveston TX and New Orleans LA. Departing Galveston on Sept 5, 1846, with several dozen passengers and crew aboard plus light cargo, the ship headed toward New Orleans. Unexpectedly, stiff winds and high seas arose, and within a few hours the ship anchored about 50 miles off the coast to weather the storm. However, conditions worsened and the ship sank on Sept 6, 1846. The ship Galveston came out from port and rescued most of the passengers and crew. A total of 18 lives were lost. A Salvage group, the Gentlemen of Fortune, found the ship in the mid 1990's, and by the end of the season in 2007 had found what seemed to be the remnants of the original safe. Scattered coins were found. All told, over 400 gold coins were brought to the surface along with some 2000 silver pieces. NCS, the sister company of NGC, was enlisted to conserve the pieces. Most of the gold coins were encapsulated by NGC. In many instances the coins were among the finest of their kind, including Charlotte and Dahlonega issues. STACKS offered some of the gold and silver coins at auction, held on JULY 27, 2008. NGC SHIPWRECK EFFECT GRADING: NGC has developed a system of assigning grades to coins showing the effects of having been lost at sea. The 'shipwreck effect' grading system applies a rating to pieces that would not otherwise be acceptable for certification by the grading service due to surface impairments. There is basically 4 'standards' applied to Shipwreck effect designated coins: Shipwreck Effect A: a coin showing evidence of light surface disturbances and with above average eye appeal; Shipwreck Effect B: coin showing evidence of light surface disturbance and may have some areas of moderate distubance, and above average eye appeal. Shipwreck Effect C: A coin displaying moderate disturbances to ists surface, while possessing at least average eye appeal. NGC also assigns a wear grade to the coin as follows: UNC (uncirculated); AU (about uncirculated); XF (extremely fine); VF (very fine); F (fine); and VG (very good). THIS PARTICULAR COIN, AN 1840 $ 5 HALF EAGLE,Narrow Mill, HAS BEEN CERTIFIED BY NGC AS SHIPWRECK EFFECT A: UNCIRCULATED. From the Stacks Auction, July 27, 2008 .....lot # 2036. This item is another coin from a ship wreck. it is from the wreck of the SS Republic. It has the papers to prove it is authentic and the case it came with an a DVD showthe wreck site and how the coins were brought to the surface. It was brought from the depth of 1700 feet and was from a wreck in 1865 after the Civil War. To me coins from wrecks do have so much to offer than just coins that were kept in books are put away. These coins offer to more more about a long journey they made just to end up in one hands.
